The United brand guitars were built in the same Jersey City, New Jersey factory that once housed the original Oscar Schmidt instrument company. Rumor has it that many guitar parts and molds were left behind and United took full advantage of reviving the classic lines and proportions of the pre-war OS parlor guitars to produce an affordable, “budget" level parlor for the burgeoning folk music market. This example had seen better days when I found it so a complete rebuild was in order. Players who enjoy wide nut and generous string spacing at the saddle take note…another American made parlor brought back to life in grand style.
SPECS: 0-size body, 12-fret neck with padded headstock, ladder-braced book matched solid spruce top in satin lacquer finish, birch sides and back in tobacco brown lacquer finish, cream bound top and sound hole, poplar neck with adjustable truss rod, vintage tuning machines, “C” neck profile, new radius’d fretboard with new frets, new ebony bridge, MOP inlays, original nut, bone saddle and pins. Nut width: 1 13/16”, String Spacing: 2 3/8”, Scale length: 24.9”, Upper bout: 9 7/8”, Lower Bout: 13 1/4”, Body length: 17 3/4”, Widest body depth: 3 1/2”, Overall length: 37 3/8”, Neck thickness at 1st fret: 13/16“, Neck thickness at 5th fret: 7/8”, Action: 3/32”, string gauge setup: D’addario EJ26 custom light gauge in standard tuning.
CONDITION: Top-off rebuild with upgraded top bracing to accommodate modern steel strings. Other work included neckset with added truss rod, ebony pyramid bridge, new radius’d fretboard/frets, nitro lacquer finish, setup. Please note that vintage, repurposed materials and finishes will have underlying swirls, scrapes, scratches, bumps and bruises. Any new features added during the rebuild were made to fit in with the old.
