Vintage Kay 000-, 14-fret roundhole archtop in birchlam with great old-time vibe

052814K

Kay made some really boring looking guitars and then it made some really fun looking guitars. This example falls into the latter category. I love the body shape, quirky finish and slotted headstock on top of a 14-fret neck. I'm not really a 14-fret kind of guy but this one drew me in. Excellent for old time, flatpickin' music.

SPECS: 000-size, body, 14-fret neck, arch-braced laminate birch top over birch sides and back in original burst lacquer, slotted headstock with original tuning machines, soft "V" low profile neck, ebonized poplar fretboard with original frets, original floating bridge and nut. Nut width: 1 13/16", String Spacing: 2 1/4", Scale length: 25.5", Upper bout: 11 1/4", Lower Bout: 15 1/2", Body length: 19", Widest body depth: 3 1/2", Overall length: 39 5/8" , Neck thickness at 1st fret: 3/4", Neck thickness at 5th fret: 7/8", Action: 1/8", String gauge setup: 52-11s.

CONDITION: Everything about this guitar was cared well cared for. Aside from some edge flakes around the back bouts, it is as solid as it looks good. Non-adjustable bridge comes with shims that allow the action to be raised or lowered. Well preserved example looking for another 50 years of playing time.

SOUND: This guitar loves old time pickin' and strummin' songs. The body size and scale length contribute to its stout voice, which I would describe as being brighter/sharper than warm/rich.

PRICE: $699
