When I’m looking for a short scale 12-fret parlor to rebuild for super-easy playing, Harmony made all-birch models from the 1960s are prime candidates to get me started. This guitar was made at the factory for nylon strings, was rarely played(as evidenced by the absence of fret wear) and retains many original features, which only calls out its vintage vibe and tone to the eyes and ears. This guitar is very easy to fret, the results of which have no bearing on its warm, intimate tone. Perfect for songwriting, couch concerts or just plain noodling (with less effort than most for the left hand).
SPECS: 0-size body, 12-fret neck with slotted headstock, ladder-braced solid birch top in original finish, birch sides and back in original finish, original painted binding and stenciled rosette, poplar neck with adjustable truss rod, easy-turn tuning machines, “D” neck profile, ebony fretboard with brass frets, new ebony bridge, MOP inlays, ebony nut and pins, bone saddle. Nut width: 1 3/4”, String Spacing: 2 5/16”, Scale length: 24”, Upper bout: 9 1/2”, Lower Bout: 13 1/4”, Body length: 17 1/2”, Widest body depth: 3 5/8”, Overall length: 36 1/8”, Neck thickness at 1st fret: 7/8“, Neck thickness at 5th fret: 7/8”, Action: 3/32”, string gauge setup: D’addario EJ40 silk & steel in standard tuning.
CONDITION: Solid rebuilt condition with upgraded bracing to accommodate modern steel strings. Other work included neckset with added truss rod, ebony bridge, frets leveled and dressed, setup. Please note that vintage, repurposed materials will have underlying swirls, scrapes, scratches, bumps and bruises. Any new features added during the rebuild were made to fit in with the old.
SOUND: Seasoned woods deliver a nice mellow tone, despite the low tension silk and steel string set. Intonation rings clear up the neck for the player with an average attack. Click the soundclip link and have a listen. Action can be adjusted to suit your playing style.
