I found this unbranded mid-century 12-fret flattop with no redeeming qualities other than potential if given the chance. The shape/proportions reminded me of a Gibson LG. I had an old Martin spruce top laying around that I thought would be a good match for the body. When all was said and done, I’m happy to report that we definitely have increased her qualities beyond “potential". This guitar has great looks and playability and the Fishman pickup just adds fuel to the fire.
SPECS: 00-size body, 12-fret neck with paddle headstock, X-braced solid spruce top in aged natural finish, mahogany/birch laminate sides and back in black lacquer finish, tortoise style top binding, poplar neck with new adjustable truss rod, vintage tuning machines w/ black buttons, full “D” neck profile, new radius’d rosewood fretboard with new medium frets, new rosewood pyramid bridge, MOP inlays, bone nut/saddle/pins. Nut width: 1 3/4”, String Spacing: 2 5/16”, Scale length: 25”, Upper bout: 11”, Lower Bout: 14 1/2”, Body length: 18 3/4”, Widest body depth: 3 3/4”, Overall length: 37 3/4”, Neck thickness at 1st fret: 7/8“, Neck thickness at 5th fret: 7/8”, Action: 3/32”, string gauge setup: Martin Monel custom lights in standard tuning.
CONDITION: Solid rebuilt condition adding spruce top with X bracing to accommodate modern steel strings to the as-found rim. Other work included neckset with new truss rod, fretboard and bridge, finish and setup. Please note that vintage, repurposed materials will have underlying swirls, scrapes, scratches, bumps and bruises. Any new features added during the rebuild were made to fit in with the old.
SOUND: Warm tone with above average projection and sustain. Fingerstyle or strummed, intonation rings clear up the neck for the player with an average attack. Fishman Rare Earth is a game changer for sofa-to-stage versatility.
