Vintage Kay 000-size, 14-fret in X-braced spruce/mahogany, 1 10/16” nut, 2 5/16” string spacing, sweetest, all-around 14-fretter on the planet
I have always loved this model Kay flattop but I never loved the wide and chunky classical neck that came with it. I had a late 1940s neck off an early Silvertone flattop hanging around and decided to make the swap. In addition to a modern adjustable truss rod, the new neck width and profile is a huge upgrade in playability, offering every guitar player smaller than Andre-the-Giant a chance to feel, hear and experience the full and resonant sound that comes out of its hole.
SPECS: 000-size body, 14-fret neck with paddle headstock, X-braced spruce top, mahogany sides and back, poplar neck in black lacquer finish, adjustable truss rod added, MOP fretboard inlays with corresponding white side dots, new Grover gold tuning machines, “D” shaped neck profile, radius’d ebony fretboard with new frets, new ebony bridge, original tortoise binding all around, original decal around sound hole, unbleached bone nut, saddle and pins. Nut width: 1 10/16”, String Spacing: 2 5/16”, Scale length: 25.4”, Upper bout: 11 1/4”, Lower Bout: 15 1/2”, Body length: 19 5/8”, body depth at end block: 4 1/8”, Overall length: 41”, Neck thickness at 1st fret: 7/8“, Neck thickness at 5th fret: 7/8”, Action: 3/32” - 1/8” to customer choice, string gauge setup: D’addario EJ16 light gauge in standard tuning.
CONDITION: Solid rebuilt condition. Original neck replaced with donor neck of proper scale length. Lacquer checking and wear visible throughout. Evidence of prior tuning machines, fretboard and bridge placement. Other work included neckset, bridge, setup. Please note that repurposed woods and vintage surfaces will have underlying swirls, scrapes, scratches, bumps and bruises.
SOUND: The tone is especially rich and full, which adds to this guitar’s versatility in handling a variety of musical genres and playing styles. If I could play a 14-fret guitar, I would keep it for myself. But alas, I cannot.
